Australia is being hit as hard as anyone else by the global recession; our dollar has fallen by about 30 cents against the US dollar (which isn’t doing too well itself) in the past few months; our largest clothing manufacturer has just shifted all its operations and thousands of jobs overseas; two hundred people are dead, dozens are missing and hundreds are homeless after the worst fire season in history; we’re still fighting two wars in the Middle East…

… and the best thing the media can find to talk about is whether the Prime Minister said “shit” by accident or on purpose during a TV interview.
